TRIS Facts
-
The Transportation Research Information Services (TRIS) Database is the world's largest and most comprehensive bibliographic resource on transportation information. TRIS is produced and maintained by the Transportation Research Board at the National Academies with sponsorship by State Departments of Transportation, the various administrations at the U.S. Department of Transportation, and other sponsors of TRB’s core technical activities.
- TRIS contains over 640,000 records of published research and almost 25,000 new records are added to TRIS each year.
- TRIS covers all modes and disciplines of transportation. Efforts have been made to increase coverage on the various transportation modes and in the fields of planning, environment, and human factors. TRIS is also expanding the TLIB files where major transportation libraries contribute cataloging records of material in their collections that would otherwise not be indexed in TRIS.
- TRIS is available through two commercial vendors Dialog and Ovid. Since 2000, most of the TRIS database has been available free on the Web as TRIS Online through the Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ National Transportation Library’s Web.
- The Research in Progress records in TRIS are available as a separate searchable database through TRB's RiP Web site. The RiP Database has expanded to include international research projects and university research.
- TRIS is indexed with a standardized vocabulary from the Transportation Research Thesaurus (TRT). The TRT is a tool to add in the indexing and retrieval of transportation information. The TRT Web page allows searching and browsing of terms in a variety of formats.
