FROGMAT USED TO COMBAT HUGE OIL SPILL IN THE SHETLANDS

Frogmat, the unique oil spill control system based on straw, was used recently to help combat the devastating effects threatened on the environment and the local fishing industry when the tanker BRAER went aground near the Shetland Islands. Frogmat is not a conventional floating boom, but a matting of chopped straw contained within a strong synthetic netting sleeve made of polypropylene with the addition of carbon fibre. It can be positioned around an oil spillage in the same way as a conventional boom, but its real strength lies in the fact that it provides a specific solution to the problem of pollution of mudflats, salt marshes and beaches. It requires no minimum draught and can, therefore, be laid in the shallowest of water, possibly using amphibious hovercraft.
