APPLICATION OF SHRP BINDER TESTS TO THE CHARACTERIZATION OF POLYMER MODIFIED BITUMENS (WITH DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE)

This paper recapitulates the techniques which have typically been used to characterize polymer modified binders and evaluates their appropriateness. Also included are results obtained from the procedures developed by the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP), i.e. direct tension at low temperatures and appraisal of rheological characteristics with a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). Tension tests with some fifteen industrial binders including pure bitumen, bitumen modified with elastomers and bitumen modified with plastomers allow for comparisons between the traditional and modern methods based on their characterizations of low-temperature behaviour.
