Beyond facilitation: an improved CRM debrief for safety training
A critical element of safety training for aviators is the Crew Resource Management (CRM) debrief. Because of the importance of this process, three debriefing tools were developed by separate research teams, two for instructors and one for crew members. The tools were introduced to 14 instructors in a recurring training course for crew members of an international air carrier. Equal numbers of debriefs were conducted, with and without the new tools. Each debrief was recorded, transcribed, and indexed, with multivariate analyses conducted to determine if there were significant differences after the tools were introduced. Results showed a greater increase in the instructors' use of facilitation, and in crew members' initiation of topics to cover. A chi square analysis of the assessment needs in four CRM skill areas showed greater agreement after the introduction of the debrief tools. Results are discussed and guidelines for using the research are presented.
